PERSONAL
He was married in Mexico in January, 2010 to his longtime
girlfriend Sara, as the couple currently resides in Europe...
His biggest influence in water polo is his father, Rick
Azevedo, the former
Men’s
National Team and Long Beach State Coach…Sister,
Cassie, was a three-time All-American and the school's
all-time
leading scorer
at Long Beach State
and is currently playing professionally in Hungary... his
mother, Libby, currently works for Cal State Long Beach
and is a member of the Mom's Water
Polo Program... Favorite musical artists are Pearl
Jam and Bruce Springstein...Says he plays water polo “to
win a gold medal for the USA.”… Admits his
most embarassing water polo moment was when he was holding
his
MVP tournament trophy and broke it while on the podium….Favorite
pre-game meal is Pasta Pomodoro.
Competing in the Olympics runs in Tony Azevedo's
family. Aunt Piedade (1932) and Aunt Maria (1936) both played
volleyball in the Games, while Aunt Lucy (1952) played basketball,
and Uncle Carlos (1972) swam the butterfly. Then there's Azevedo's
dad, Ricardo, who was an assistant coach for the Olympic men's
water polo team in '96 and for a year and a half, from December,
2005 to June, 2007 the Head Coach for the men's national team.
And now it's Tony's turn. Or, rather, the first of many turns.
In December of 2008, Tony joined forces with
Elton John and his AIDS foundation for a London-based gallery
and photography book by Anderson and Low.
