The U.S. opened up the new year with a resounding 4-0 start and easy 17-1 win in the opening match of the Pan Pacific Championships. The Americans took a 10-1 lead into the intermission.

After a 1-1 start, the Americans scored three unanswered early to take a 4-1. After the Japanese clawed back to 4-3 the U.S. went into the break up 7-3. Again Japan came within one, 7-6, before a 10-7 and 13-7 lead put the match out of reach.

In what became a family affair with Tony playing against his father, Ricardo (the head coach for Team China), the Americans made easy work of the upstart program going up 8-1 and never looking back.

In a back and forth match, the Americans had to rally in the first half, down 4-2, to head into the break 4-4. Tony gave the U.S. a 6-5 lead in the third stanza, only to see the Aussies tie it at 6-6 with 30 seconds to go in regulation.

The Americans remained undefeated following an easy 17-5 win over Brazil, home to Tony's latest pro team. After a 3-2 first period lead, the Americans unloaded with eight goals to lead 11-3 and never look back.

The Australian "B" team gave the U.S. its second tie (both to Aussie squads). The Americans had to fight back from 3-1 and 7-5 deficits, the last coming in the fourth period. The U.S. outscored its Aussie opponents 4-2 in the final frame.

Using a game-high six goals, the Americans opened up the 2012 season with a gold medal in the Pan Pacific Championships. The Americans held leads of 4-3 and 6-5 before a 3-2 final frame by the Aussies sent the game into overtime at 9-9.
